So far we try to answer some basic questions:
Why a dog’s owner decides a home made dog food?
Most owners have become concerned about safe and healthy food they feed their dogs. They changed the dogs’ diet from the commercial to the home made after the great pet scandal.
(Also remember, the word “diet” by definition from Latin is “style of life”)
Those owners want to be confident that their dogs have fresh, natural food of high quality rather than toxic ingredients, preservatives and other suspicious stuff found in contaminated pet food.
The other reason: dogs simply refuse dry kibbles. Or some dogs have special needs in nutrition in accordance with their health problems or allergies.
There are dogs’ owners who used to cook for dogs as they did long-long ago, and will never change the way of feeding in spite of all. They have no doubt that home made food is the best dogs’ nutrition.
At last, there are kind of dogs’ owners who LOVE cooking, especially for their furry family members and friends. It’s a way to show they care and how valuable the dogs are, the way to be closer to each other in terms of the dog-human relationships. Both, dogs and owners enjoy the home made way of feeding.
What do vets say about home made dog food?
Vets mostly approve home made dog food. However, they are aware of a main disadvantage of home made diet. It is that it’s hardly possible to balance the nutrition according to the nutritional standards. No 100% balanced dog food is available in home conditions. Here is what they say:
Jean Hofve, DVM a holistic veterinarian and companion animal program coordinator for the Animal Protection Institute, She recommends a homemade diet, knowing you are buying good-quality ingredients. "The only thing that you don't control is 100 percent of what goes into a multi-vitamin supplement." says Hofve, "but you have a good idea that you're buying from a reputable company.
Russo thinks homemade diets are promising but it is too early to tell. "We're beginning to see and hear of good results using these methodologies, but there haven't been enough long-term, in-depth studies that are very verifiable, to permit early, blanket judgments to be made." Both Russo and Hofve agree the homemade diet will have to be balanced consistently. It is dangerous if not balanced: "If you're going to commit to make a homemade diet, commit to do it right”, says Hofve
Nutritional standards of all dog food (especially manufactured) is superwised by Pets health organizations (AAFCO)
